German mathematician, astronomer and astrologer

A major figure in the 17th century scientific revolution. He published his Laws of Planetary Motion in 1609. He was instrumental in debunking the long-held view that the sun orbited the Earth. He realised that the orbits of the Earth and the other planets around the Sun were elliptical rather than purely circular. He discovered that because a planets orbit is elliptical, a planets speed in orbit around the Sun is not constant but varies within the elliptical orbit.
